Pastel Portrait of a Little girl in White Dress

Soft Pastels 12"x 16"
This is what I have been busy doing lately- a portrait of my lovely little niece.She is a hyper active three year old and you almost never catch her sitting still! Her mom clicked a picture of her in one such rare moment -and finally I got one to paint!Well she looks like a very quiet little girl here, but looks are deceptive :)

    This one is beautiful Arti and your niece is really cute!!

    I just want to ask you something..."What does self-taught artist actually mean?" You're such a wonderful artist. I'm an absolute beginner and I'm really BAD. But recently, I've developed a deep interest in painting, especially watercolours. Can I really paint nicely if I practice regularly with dedication (Of course internet helps a lot!)? I've just started and If I try to paint according to my imagination it turns out to be a disaster...:)

      Dear Tarang Sinha, I hope you don't mind if I interject a comment here. I have wondered about Arti's phrase 'self-taught' as well. I think it means that she's humble even though she's a stunningly talented artist. I believe she's discovered many artistic techniques on her own that are usually taught in classes and she certainly has an uncommon dedication to her art. These two things have carried her a long way.

      Here comes some unsolicited advice: You should revel in letting your deep interest in painting take you where it will. Don't worry about your level of skill compared to anyone else. You've already said that you can see your own improvement as you work at it, so let your joy lead you.

      Too much judgement, especially early in the process, can kill art. Someone once said, "Don't think. Just do." Was it Yoda?

      Okay, I'm done lecturing now. Carry on.

      Hello Tarang. Julie is a wizard with words- she has put it in such a beautiful way that I don't really need to add much… being ‘self taught’ means you are your own tutor, you need to find your own mistakes and correct them ,and work on improvement with each artwork. At least that is what I do. That said,Julie is right in saying that being too critical in initial stage can kill your art; you should make a start and let your art take shape.This journey may be long but it will be full of joy, I assure you.
