Owl Alert

7x10
Another owl..I did spend some time on this one, using first a basic wash and then adding the detail in various colors and etching out the feathers with a rigger. The paper was langton cold pressed which allows time to add detail.I have used mostly cobalt blue, opera pink, a bit of sepia for darker areas and yellow ochre for base. For his eyes I'v  used Indian yellow- though opaque, it still is quite a vivacious color..I like the way it uplifts the artwork when used sparingly.

  1. Lovely owl, Arti! Beautifully done detail. I appreciate your comment about the Langton paper. I have been using Saunders/Waterford, and find it dries a bit quickly, and also has wows when wet - makes it more awkward to use. Have you used a paper that stays wet longer, and does not develop waviness when wet?

    1. Thanks Kathryn.Saunders is good for fast painting; wet in wet- not sure about layers and washes, though. You might think about trying Langton cold pressed. It has nice texture, is whiter than Saunders and takes time to dry.Try a small paper block first.
I use either a block glued on all sides(too impatient to stretch a paper everyday!) or stretch my paper using gummed brown tape, when I am feeling generous ;) That hasn't failed so far..paper dries dead flat! Just remember to use a wide masking tape beneath the gummed tape- so that it comes off easily after you are finished.
I have just got Saunders hot pressed to try. Will let you know how it turns out x

    1. Hi Sherry I have been using many pinks to find the one that suits me best.In the end I had to go back to Pink Tyrian by Pebeo( since I don't get it here- I had to order from Blick and had to pay a custom duty as well!)I hear that Daniel Smith Opera Pink is good--will try that out in future.Pink is a beautiful color but have to get that right :)

  6. Sweet face on this one. I was walking alone with my dog the other evening and an owl hooted. I hooted back and we talked for a couple of minutes, though I never saw him. I'm not quite sure what I said either. I like to think he was tolerant of my ignorance. Arti, I love that you can use purple in almost any piece.
