Roosters in Watercolours

''Sylvie'' 12''x16''
Watercolour on Arches CP Paper

Ms Maran
10''x14''
SOLD
Some more chickens... still struggling to decide how much detail I need! The top one was painted with a loose hand, wet-in-wet and with salt texture. The chicken at the bottom was a Maran that have a distinctive speckled plumage. I took a different approach with this one and painted with a very fine brush. The result was alright and it was also Sold instantly; but I must say that fine detail is not what I enjoy. Loose and wet is what I prefer.

Alice

I am really into birds these days..especially roosters and hens.Working with some more salt texture in this one.Tails are much more fun, just load a large brush with dripping wet color and sweep across the paper!

Cooped

7x10
Last one ( probably!) in the rooster series.I have added some background detail in this one to see if it alters it in anyway.Does it? I do have some more pictures of chicken peeking out of wire mesh enclosures that I had taken on a farm May be I would try some more!

Rise and Shine!

7x10
White rooster set against an umber-blue background.I am quite happy with the granulation, Langton paper is best for this kind of effect.

Golden Rooster

10x7
Last evening I painted some roosters. This fella made it here, others will have to await their turns.
Somehow going loose seems to be the best way to represent roosters! I tried tighter but it did not look as good...or may be not to me!I love this unbridled style though I am yet not good enough to be able to apply it to every subject-- so until I practice a LOT more, it works just for roosters and rabbits.
It does resembles a lot to the roosters of  UK artist Jean Haines. I love her paintings. But I wouldn't want to be accused of copying -- this kind of thing just flows out of my brush! Can a style be a copyright?
I am still contemplating the qualities of 'looseness' verses 'accuracy'...
Have a good day!

Crimson Crown Rooster

9"x12" Waterolor
Last 6-7 days have not been good to me... had a sore throat with a lot of coughing and hardly any sleep at night. With this the old cough has returned,it seems. The specialist's appointment is still a good month away.So all I can do is drink a lot of honey-lemon-water/tea. But painting always takes a hit when I am not feeling 100% well.Did not paint at all for last whole week- this morning I decided to break the dry spell by painting some loose pieces. This rooster is the only one who made it to my blog post!
The focus was his crown so I kept the background and even the feathers at minimum with some salt texture thrown in.What do you think?
